An annual event held since 1969, honoring rice farming in the Southeast Texas region around Winnie. Includes a carnival, two parades, livestock show, longhorn show, open horse show, BBQ cook off, nightly street dances, antique car show, rice cooking contest, pageants, and features food made with rice and flavors of the Cajun culture.

PalmFest will feature major attractions, historical displays, shopping, art, family games, rides and kids activities, cooking competitions and demonstrations, live entertainment, classic car show, diverse food and beverage. There will be two Cookoffs at this year’s PalmFest International Folklife Celebration at the McAllen Convention, The Fajita Cookoff, “Smokin’ Since 1976”, will once again celebrate the birthplace of the fajita in deep South Texas with crazy cooking teams competing in 5 categories; Pan de Campo, Frijoles, Mollejas, Traditional & Gourmet Fajitas. There will be cash prizes & custom made mini BBQ pit trophies for the top fajita aficionados. And The Fajita Cookoff will move to Sunday October 5th rather than on Saturday as before. New this year is a lower entry fee of $125 for all 5 categories plus Showmanship Award. The PalmFest Dutch Oven Cookoff is sanctioned by the International Dutch Oven Society, IDOS.org., and produced by Mike Key, local official. This will be a 3 pot Cookoff consisting of an entrée, dessert and bread. The first place winner will be invited to compete in the World Championship in March 2015 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Grand Prairie, Texas
One of the longest running BBQ events in Texas and this year’s event is expected to be better than ever, attracting BBQ cooks from across the state and beyond. The event is free to the public both days, with only a $3.00 parking fee. BBQ competition: Chicken, Pork Spare Ribs, Brisket, and a Kids Cook Off. The barbeque cooks and their cooking devices are a show in themselves at this culinary event. The serious beef barons will showcase custom-made, unique traveling pits with individual touches of creativity to suit the owner’s taste. While the cooking competition can become serious, the atmosphere and camaraderie will be strictly fun-filled recreation. Cookoff visitors will get a firsthand look at how seriously barbequers take their cooking and their fun. You can look, smell and often taste. If you ask when a team isn’t busy preparing an entry for the judges, you can get some practical tips on how to improve your home barbeque cooking skills. There will be a need for individuals to judge the competition. The public is invited to sign up, at the cookoff judging area, for a free chance to judge the BBQ competition.

The World Champion Hopkins County Stew Contest hosts 150 cooking teams stirring up hearty chicken or beef stew in huge cast iron pots over open wood fires at beautiful Buford Park in Sulphur Springs on the 4th Saturday in October. Visitors are encouraged to get to the stew grounds early so that they may enjoy seeing the campsites uniquely decorated with wagon trains, simmering pots and glowing campfires.
