April 21, 2017 Shad, Grapes and Grains Festival - Wakefield, Virginia
The Shad Planking traces its origin to the early 1930s when a group of friends gathered together at Wrenn’s Mill in Isle Of Wight County during the spring running of the shad in the James River. They planked the shad after the tradition of native Virginia Indians and they talked politics after the tradition of their fathers before them. The annual Spring rite, held during the shad run in the James River, is a unique assembly of the many and varying views of the people and politics of the Commonwealth of Virginia. In 2016 the Shad Planking completed another monumental evolution with the addition of the Grapes & Grains festival. Wineries, vineyards, and distilleries from all over the state will come in order to let Virginians taste the fruits of their labors. Local artisans and business owners will exhibit their goods, services, and art. The Shad Planking is guaranteed to have something perfect for everyone.
