July 3-4, 2016 Grand Bay Watermelon Festival
Grand Bay, Alabama
A July 4 tradition since 1973, the Grand Bay Watermelon Festival offers tourists and locals an opportunity to sample locally grown watermelon while enjoying local music, arts & crafts, and informative displays from area merchants and service providers. The annual celebration has a long and storied history, having begun during the earliest years of the 20th Century. As the community and surrounding area changed during World War II, the annual celebration was discontinued. It was revived in 1973 by the Grand Bay Junior Chamber of Commerce. Currently, it is sponsored by the Grand Bay Independent Odd Fellows #73, and is held at the Festival Park and baseball park just north of U.S. Highway 90 on the west side of Grand Bay.
July 15-17, 2016 83rd Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo
Dauphin Island, Alabama
Officially the largest fishing tournament in the world. With more than thirty award categories and a total prize package of up to $1 million, it’s no surprise that fishing hopefuls have descended upon this top-notch three-day event for almost a century. Proceeds from the event benefit the Mobile Jaycees. Various species caught throughout the weekend will be used for scientific testing done by the Food and Drug Administration and the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and Estuarium. Activities, vendors, music and fish weigh-ins begin at 9:00 a.m. and lasts through the evening. This event is free and open to the public.
