The Blessing of the Fleet is an annual festival that the Darien-McIntosh County Chamber of Commerce hosts to celebrate our biggest industry, shrimping. This three day fun-filled event consists of an art show, various food and drink vendors, arts and crafts, a YMCA 5K, children's activities, a classic car show, nightly live entertainment and a marine parade. On Sunday we Bless our shrimp-boat captains with a safe and prosperous season. Darien's Blessing of the Fleet is the largest on the East Coast! The event is sanctioned by the Florida BBQ Association and was declared a State Championship Cook-off by Governor Sonny Perdue in 2009. Last year, 38 pro cook teams competed in the event, which was also an automatic qualifier for the World Food Championships held in Las Vegas, NV. The Barnesville-Lamar County Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce that the 2016 event committee will be awarding its 9th annual scholarship in memory of the late Mayor Dewaine T. Bell. The scholarship is paid for by festival sponsorships as well as memorial paper pig sales.

Each year local restaurants and caterers show off their specialty menu items in smaller portions so everyone can have a "little of something" or go back and enjoy another portion of their favorite.

The cook off consists of two divisions: Professional and Backyard Bar-B-Q. Prizes will be awarded in both categories. The Grand Champion will receive $700 and proudly possess the coveted Chicken City Cup for one year. The 2016 Spring Chicken Festival will kick off with a 5k, Chicken City Parade, Cook-off, live entertainment, Re-Hatched upcycled art market and kids zone! The parade will include floats, vintage cars, and is sure to have some interesting chicken decorations. Participants are encouraged to incorporate recycling when possible. The parade route will include the Gainesville Square. Back by popular demand "Re-Hatched" an upcycled/recycled art/craft market. There will be artists featuring creations made from recycled or repurposed materials.
