May 25, 2009 Cheese Rolling at Cooper's Hill in Gloucestershire

THE 2010 EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED AMID HEALTH AND SAFETY CONCERNS. It has become too popular (15,000 attended in 2009). There is talk that it may still take place, but nothing official. Competitors run, roll & somersault themselves down the steep (1:2 gradient), grassy slopes of Coopers Hill in pursuit of a 7- 8 lb (4kg) Double Gloucester cheese. The event has been taking place for possibly hundreds of years. Documentary evidence shows that Cheese Rolling on Cooper's Hill was already an old tradition in the early 1800s.
