MARTINI

Professor Jerry Thomas's "The Bon Vivant's Companion or How to Mix Drinks", originally published in 1862.

One dash of bitters
Two dashes maraschino liqueur
One pony Old Tom gin
One Wineglass Vermouth
Two small lumps of ice

Shake up thoroughly, and strain into a large cocktail glass.

Put a quarter of a slice of lemon in the glass and serve.

If the guest prefers it very sweet, add two dashes of gum syrup.
