REVIEW
Everywhere? How could a restaurant be everywhere? Let me tell you that with all the mopeds running around this 4 by 2 mile island it’s easier than you might think. Okay, the base of operations is at the foot of Front Street at the old seaport here in town, but as you can tell from the get go simply by the name, this is not a formal sit down eatery. Your dining table can be wherever you want it to be.
In essence the name tells most of the story. The food is “damn good” and the way both locals and visitors operate here anything that is “to go” is appreciated and valued. Most of the local jobs here are related to the tourist or service/hospitality industry, and no matter which side of that fence you find yourself on, a delivery service with a decent selection of items to satisfy your hunger is a damn good thing. If you are the night auditor at any one of the 100 plus hotels or Inns here you need this place. If you’re a visitor and don’t want to stray too far from the sun and fun then you need this place too.
I remember the first time I called. I had just gotten off of work at 11 pm and was sitting with my bartender solving the problems of the world and we both suddenly got hungry. Out came the Damn Good Food menu (it’s in every file cabinet in Key West) and I ordered; are you ready for this? A grouper Reuben sandwich with fries. No, not corned beef but grouper! I’m adventurous what can I say. Surprise… it was very good. You don’t have to stretch your taste bud muscles that far if you don’t want to, and you can still get the burger, cheese steak etc. I like local fish and the prospect of eating it in the context of a Reuben gave me a kick. My friend on the other side of the bar didn’t balk at it and it was a pleasant surprise.
So, if you’re in your hotel room after your “Duval crawl” and can’t move another inch but you just have to eat then call the front desk and have the bellman bring you up the Damn Good Food to go menu. They’re not worth their salt if they don’t have a stack of them under the computer. Upon delivery be kind and generous i.e. (tip well) to the delivery person because it’s hot outside, they came right to your door, it probably didn’t take long and it’s “damned” expensive to live here (sorry for the editorial comment…but it’s true).
