SOUTH DAKOTA MEAT LOAF

The Taste of Home Cookbook
New Revised 2nd Edition
This traditional oven-baked meat loaf takes about 1½ hours to bake. The savory combination of sage and Worcestershire sauce in South Dakota Meat Loaf nicely complements the ground beef.
Lauree Buus, Rapid City, South Dakota

Prep: 10 min.
Bake: 1 hour 25 min. + standing
Yield: 6 servings.

Ingredients

    1 egg, lightly beaten
    1/3 cup evaporated milk
    3/4 cup quick-cooking oats
    1/4 cup chopped onion
    2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
    1 teaspoon salt
    1/2 teaspoon rubbed sage
    1/8 teaspoon pepper
    1½ pounds ground beef
    1/4 cup ketchup

Directions

1) In a large bowl, combine the egg, milk, oats, onion, Worcestershire sauce and seasonings. Crumble beef over mixture and mix well.

2) Press into an ungreased 8-in. x 4-in. x 2-in. loaf pan. Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 1¼ hours; drain.

3) Drizzle with ketchup; bake 10 minutes longer or until meat is no longer pink and a meat thermometer reads 160°. Let stand for 5-10 minutes before slicing.
