Keftedes Saltsa
(Mediterranean Spiced Meatballs)
Periyali, a New York landmark serving Greek cuisine to devoted regulars for over two decades, is the perfect retreat from fruit cake and holiday buffets. Periyali’s fresh, Mediterranean flavors will transport you to the coastline of Greece, leaving egg nog as just a bad memory. 
Spice up your own holiday soiree with Periyali’s Mediterranean Spiced Meatballs, a favorite recipe of longtime Periyali lover Lucy Liu.
Makes 20-30 Meatballs

 

Ingredients

    Meatballs:
    • 2½ lbs ground beef
    • 5 teaspoons cumin
    • 3 teaspoons curry powder
    • ½ ground cinnamon
    • 4 eggs
    • 1 cup bread crumbs
    • Salt and pepper to taste

    Sauce:
    • 2 onions grated
    • 4 cloves garlic minced
    • 3-4 medium cans whole peeled tomato
     

Procedure for Meatballs:
1. Add together all ingredients and mix well

2. Roll into two ounce balls

3. Bake in preheated oven (450 degrees F) for 20 minutes

4. Add to sauce without oil
 

Procedure for Sauce:
1. Sauté onion and garlic

2. Add tomato and cook for 30 minutes

3. Add meatballs and cook for 20 minutes

4. Slow simmer
