Land O’Lakes to Offer Butter Half Sticks in 1-lb. Package Nationally in 2009

Exclusive 1-lb. Half Stick Packages Previously Available Only on East Coast

Dec. 22, 2008
LAND O LAKES Butter “Half Sticks” are going national.  Land O’Lakes, Inc. announces today that its exclusive Half Stick packaging configuration will be available in its flagship 1-lb. package of LAND O LAKES® Salted Butter throughout the country in the first quarter of 2009.  Changing demographics and time-starved U.S. consumers prompted the dairy foods manufacturer to introduce this new butter stick size.

Due to growing consumer demand for convenience packaging, Land O’Lakes began offering a new 1-lb. package of LAND O LAKES® Salted Butter with eight (2-ounce/one-quarter cup) Half Sticks early in 2008.  The new packaging was available in approximately half the country—21 states along the Eastern Seaboard and across the Southeast—in addition to its original package with four full-length, quarter-pound sticks.

LAND O LAKES® 1-lb. Salted Butter in Half Sticks will begin appearing in grocers’ dairy cases next to packages of other LAND O LAKES® Butter products in new markets in late February and early March of 2009.  The product will be available in 29 additional states stretching from the Midwest to the Pacific Coast, including: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.

What’s great about the LAND O LAKES® Butter Half Sticks?  First, consumers who need a smaller portion of butter don’t have to cut into a larger stick, allowing the butter to be consumed while it’s at its freshest.  Since it’s pre-cut and wrapped, the one-quarter cup Half Stick is ideal for many smaller recipes and prepared dishes calling for that exact portion of butter.  Plus, consumers won’t have to rewrap partially used sticks.  The remaining butter stays sealed in its original wrapper, preventing it from losing freshness or picking up odors or flavors while in the refrigerator.

With the introduction of the Half Stick packaging, LAND O LAKES® Salted Butter is now available nationwide in three packaging configurations—a half-pound or 1-lb. package with Half Sticks, or a 1-lb. package with full-length, quarter-pound sticks.  In order to differentiate from traditional LAND O LAKES® Butter packages, the 1-lb. Half Stick package will have an information burst on the left hand side stating, “New Size! 8 Half Sticks.”  The new 1-lb. Half Stick package of LAND O LAKES® Salted Butter will be priced the same as its traditional full-length stick counterpart.

For consumers on the West Coast, Land O’Lakes will continue to offer its western-style packaging of LAND O LAKES® Salted Butter, as well as the Half Stick package, which comes in an Elgin-style or East Coast-style package.  The states that carry the western-style packaging are: Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming.

Land O’Lakes is the only butter manufacturer producing butter in Half Sticks.  This latest offering is part of a company effort to introduce innovation and convenience to the butter category.  This initiative has led to the introduction of such products as LAND O LAKES® Spreadable Butter with Canola Oil and LAND O LAKES® Light Butter with Canola Oil, as well as the FlavorProtect® Wrapper, the company’s exclusive, specially designed butter wrapper that seals in freshness and keeps out other flavors.

Land O’Lakes, Inc., a Minnesota-based food and agriculture company, is a leading supplier of quality dairy products.  In 1921, Land O’Lakes began making butter from sweet—not sour—cream.  Ever since that breakthrough, the company has been a leading producer of butter and other pure, wholesome dairy products that deliver simple goodness to consumers.  Visit landolakes.com anytime for great recipes and meal ideas.
