THE GARDENING ZONE
For over 25 years, I've been gardening on a steep hillside overlooking the Mississippi River in Fountain City, WI. My zone 4, terraced garden includes varied collections of perennials, annuals, vegetables and herbs. Giant white pines shade a patio with a simulated spring flowing from the rocks. Another area includes a rock garden. Some of the stone walls are ideal for climbing vines.
During our long Midwestern winters, a gardener's passion intensifies with the anticipation of getting out into the garden. The Midwestern climate has its challenges--intense summer heat and periods of high rainfall with intermittent drought followed by frigid cold. Dealing with all of these obstacles contributes to the character of each gardener. Part o f the interest of gardening is that no two gardens are the same and no gardener's results are the same from year to year. It's a constant evolution. I feel that gardening is about sharing, even with a passing acquaintance. You always have common ground for a conversation. Life isn't always a bed of roses, and the garden is the perfect getaway to work out frustrations by pulling weeds and getting dirty hands. It was my mother's and grandmother's love of flowers and gardens the inspired my own love to the point of it becoming my own passion. I hope you enjoy my website!
I’m a member of The Bluff Country Master Gardeners LaCrosse, WI. My favorite volunteer project is tending the flower gardens at the Prairie Moon Museum and Sculpture Gardens five miles north of where I live in Fountain City, Wisconsin.
Take some time to soak up a little peace and serenity in your own garden.
“Gardening is civil and social, but it wants the vigor and freedom of the forest and the outlaw.” ~Henry David Thoreau
