HUNGER & HUNGRY PEOPLE FACTS

The United Nations FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) projected in 2009 that hunger affected one billion people - about 1/6 of the world's population.

At the beginning of the 2008 fall harvest season in the Northern Hemisphere, world grain stocks were down to just 62 days of consumption.  World grain production had fallen short of consumption in 6 of the previous 9 years.
Foreign Affairs (Vol 89 No. 1)

In 2000 it was estimated there were 850 million hungry people in the world.  Despite goals adopted by world leaders, by 2008 the figure had actually risen to 950 million.

There are 40,000 hunger-related deaths every day.
