KELP

Kelp is the common name for a number of leafy brown algae, (seaweeds).
The Giant Pacific Kelp, used in Japanese cooking under the name 'kombu', grows at the rate of almost a foot a day, and can reach lengths of 400 feet or more.
Kelp was once a major source of potash and iodine, and today is used to obtain alginic acid. Alginic acid is used in tire manufacturing, in ice cream to prevent it from crystallizing, and in paints.
