HOMINY
Several Virginia Algonquian words have been borrowed by the English language, including hominy, tomahawk and pone (as in cornpone).
Today the term 'grits' commonly refers to 'hominy grits,' but actually 'grits' is a term for any coarsely ground grain, like rice, oats, corn, etc. Hominy grits is coarsely ground corn (larger particles than corn meal).
