KRAFT

According to Carolyn Wyman in 'Better Than Homemade' (2004), Kraft Macaroni & Cheese Dinner is the number one selling grocery item in Canada.

In 1903, James L. Kraft, with a rented cart and $65 in capital, began a wholesale cheese business in Chicago.  Eventually 3 of his brothers joined the company and in 1909 they incorporated as J.L. Kraft Bros. & Company.

The company was acquired by National Dairy Products in 1930, which changed its name to Kraft Inc in 1976; merged with Dart Industries in 1980, split off in 1986, and taken over by Philip Morris Companies in 1988.

Kraft introduced Velveeta process cheese loaf in 1928.

"A delicious Cheese Food consisting of Kraft Process American Cheese with added milk sugar, milk minerals and water."

Kraft Macaroni & Cheese Dinner debuted in 1937 after an intrepid salesman came up with the idea to sell more cheese by combining it with a box of macaroni noodles. Now, more than one million boxes are sold each day (2008).

    • 'Now make richer macaroni-and-cheese the 9 minute way!'

    • 'Make a meal for 4 in 9 minutes.'

Kraft introduced Cheez Whiz in 1952.
