On this day in:

9th or 10 century St. Swithin's Day. If it rains on St. Swithin's Day, it means rain for 40 days.
'St. Swithin’s day, gif ye do rain,
for forty days it will remain;
St. Swithin’s day, an ye be fair,
for forty days ’twill rain nae mair.'

1779 Clement Clarke Moore was born (died July 10, 1863). Author of classic poem, "A Visit from St. Nicholas" (now popularly known as "The Night Before Christmas"). (see also Dec 24, 1822)

1808 Sir Henry Cole was born (died April 18, 1882). British civil servant and inventor. He is credited with creating the idea of sending greeting cards at Christmas time in 1843.

1845 William H. Fruen was born (died Oct 19, 1917). Received the first U.S. patent for a liquid dispensing vending machine. (see Dec 16, 1884)

1868 William T. G. Morton died (born Aug 9, 1819).  An American surgeon, in 1846 he became the first dentist to use ether (letheon) during a tooth extraction.

1869 Hippolyte Mege Mouries received French patent No. 86489 for his process to make margarine. Emperor Napoleon III had offered a prize for a suitable substitute for butter, for use by the French Navy.

1877 Amedeo Obici was born (died May 22, 1947).  Obici and Mario Peruzzi founded Planters Peanut Company in 1906.  (Planter’s Nuts Trivia & Facts)

1931 'Kid Chocolate' (Elgio Saldana) becomes Cuba's first world boxing champion after defeating Benny Bass for the Jr. Lightweight Championship.

1945 Peter Lewis of the music group 'Moby Grape' was born.

2005 The movie 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' opened in U.S. theatres.
