DEL MONTE FOODS TRIVIA

The Del Monte® brand was introduced in 1892 as the brand name for a line of canned peaches.  The 'Del Monte' name had been used as early as 1886 for a premium blend of coffee prepared for the Hotel Del Monte on the Monterey peninsula.

Del Monte Foods was founded in San Francisco in 1916. It was at this time that the predecessor company, California Packing Corporation, or "Calpak," was formed through a merger of four large California canning companies. The Company processed a broad selection of high-quality canned fruits, vegetables and seafood.

Del Monte was the first canner to offer a broad line of California processed foods to the entire nation and the first to advertise it nationally.

Del Monte cans more than 1/3 of all canned fruits and more than 1/4 of all canned vegetables in the United States.

In 1973 Del Monte was the first major food processor in the U.S. to include nutrition labels on its products.
