ICEBERG LETTUCE
In 1894, W. Atlee Burpee introduced crisphead (iceberg) lettuce in their seed catalog. They take about 85 days from sowing to maturity.
Iceberg lettuce supposedly got it's name from the fact that California growers started shipped it covered with heaps of crushed ice in the 1920s. It had previously been generally called Crisphead lettuce.
Iceberg lettuce is 90% water and has very little flavor, and almost no nutrients.
