It is unusual for runners to stay in control all the way down. The winner takes home the cheese as well as a few cuts and bruises. The event has been taking place for possibly hundreds of years. Documentary evidence shows that Cheese Rolling on Cooper's Hill was already an old tradition in the early 1800s.
