1) This is one of the most widely distributed freshwater fish in the world. Originally from Asia, they were probably introduced into Europe by the 13th century, and brought to the United States by 1876. This fish family also includes minnows. In the Middle Ages monks raised them in ponds to provide food for fast days when they could not eat meat. It is frequently raised in ponds and lakes today.

2) This fruit has at least 15 different names, but for all these exotic names, this is simply a subtropical member of the squash family, eaten as a vegetable. The pear shaped fruit can be light green or white, with a single seed and a taste similar to zucchini. The fruit is eaten raw or it can be boiled, fried, baked, or stuffed. The young root tubers and young shoots are also eaten.   It is native to Mexico and Central America and was a popular vegetable with the Mayas and Aztecs. It's cultivation has spread all over the world, including the Caribbean, Algeria, Madagascar, Polynesia, southern U.S., China, Indonesia, New Zealand and Australia.

3) This palm tree is a member of the coconut family, and it's fruit takes 10 years to mature, looks like a Siamese coconut (2 joined together) and weighs up to 50 pounds. It is found only on the Seychelles Islands in the Indian Ocean. Empty shells were washed ashore in India long before the source was known, and they were considered to have magical properties.

5) The fruit from this tree is called 'monkey bread' and is eaten as is or used to make a drink, its flesh is dried and ground into flour, and the leaves are dried and crushed for flavoring. Even the pulp of the tree is sometimes eaten.

6) This fruit is native to Ecuador. They are believed to be a natural hybrid of the papaya, and are unique because they are distinctly 5 sided. They grow to about 8 - 12 inches long and 4 inches in diameter, are juicy, seedless and have a flavor described as a cross between pineapple, papaya and strawberry. They are grown on a small scale commercially in New Zealand and the Middle East.

7) A fish stew which originated with Portuguese and Italian fishermen in San Francisco, California. It consists of fish and shellfish cooked with garlic, tomato and white wine.

8) The fruit of this tree grows directly on the trunk and looks like a small melon. Inside, the pulp contains 20 to 50 seeds or 'beans'. It takes about 400 of these 'beans' to make a pound of finished product.
