September 17-October 3, 2011 178th Munich Oktoberfest Munich, Germany The first Oktoberfest was held in the year 1810 in honor of the Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig’s marriage to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. The festivities began on October 12, 1810 and ended on October 17th with a horse race. In the following years, the celebrations were repeated and, later, the festival was prolonged and moved forward into September.

December 1-24, 2011 Munich Christmas Market 2011 Munich, Germany The Munich Christmas Market originated in 1642, selling gifts of Lebkuchen (gingerbread), bees wax candles, Bavarian wood carvings and glassware, and chimney sweeps made of almonds and plums. Today, several Christmas Markets throughout Munich offer many of these traditional gifts and thousands more. A concert of holiday music is presented each day from the balcony of Munich's town hall.
December 3, 2011 Dresden Stollen Festival 2011 Dresden, Germany The festival is part of Dresden's Christmas Market, held since 1434. The Stollen Festival celebrates the famous Christmas bread, which is filled with fruit and nuts. Hundreds of pastry chefs parade the world's largest stollen, weighing four tons, through the streets of Old Town.
