The second major planting season of the year comes in September. Gardeners in the North can begin to plant beds of spring flowering bulbs like crocus, tulips and daffodils. It is an important month for seeding and feeding lawns and for transplanting evergreens. We should begin a weekly soaking of evergreens and shrubs before the ground freezes. Collect fallen leaves to use for compost or mulch. Perennials, especially the early spring flowering ones, can be divided at this time. Pick squash, peppers and tomatoes as they mature and before frost nips them. My bird feeders are usually cleaned and stocked with suet and seeds this month.
