My Garden - October

Gardeners in the eastern and central U.S. can continue planting beds of spring blooming bulbs during October. It's also a great time for planting pots of them to force for indoor bloom during the winter.
By now fall cleanup is well under way and I finish collecting seeds from heirloom varieties of marigolds and beans that have been left to dry on the plants. Dig and store tubers and bulbs such as dahlias and calla lilies.
Delay mulching perennial beds until the ground has frozen. Continue to mow the lawn until freezing stops the growth and keep it short over the winter to deter mold and pests.
