Continued watering and deadheading are important chores for northern gardeners in August. This is often a very dry month, so a new layer of mulch may be in order for the more drought susceptible plants. Many vegetables ripen at this time of year and putting them by consumes a lot of time--always on the hottest days, or so it seems. This is also a good time to start a strawberry bed for fresh fruit next year. Bring in lots of fresh flowers for special summer arrangements. Use strong streams of water on insect infested plants to dislodge the culprits, which seem to love the month of August.
