In April, there will still be some cold weather, but gardeners in the Central and Eastern U.S. may plant seeds for spring vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, and peas as soon as the soil is dry enough. Cold hardy annuals like sweet alyssum may also be sown directly in the beds where they are to bloom. It's a good time to plant trees and shrubs, which are available as soon as nurseries open for the season. Most spring and summer-blooming perennials may be divided and transplanted in April. I especially like to roam the country roads looking for the first wildflowers.
