WHITE PAPER BIRCH

Birch trees grow in a variety of conditions, such as on this cliff overlooking the Mississippi River near Alma, WI. Although birch trees may favor more plentiful moisture, they receive full sun and good drainage in this location. White birch, also known as paper birch, is common throughout the northern U.S. It may grow up to 80 feet in height. The bark is bright white and peels into horizontal strips, revealing a reddish-colored layer. Young trees display reddish-brown bark, while older trees appear gray. The hard, beautiful wood is used in cabinetry. Birch foliage is bright yellow in the fall. We took these pictures on a snowshoeing hike from the town of Alma, Wisconsin to Buena Vista Park at the top of the bluff above the town.
