Holiday Savers

by Katharine Branham - Archive of Katharine’s Articles

Many months back I decided to subscribe to a water delivery service, and it turned out to be great for everyday use as well as for any emergency situation that might arise. They often send a calendar with the drop off dates that stays attached to the refrigerator. It is nice to pull up in the driveway and find the service has been by. I often just pull the water containers into the pantry and continue with my day.

The other thing I keep in the house as a staple is organic chicken broth. There are so many wonderful things to make when you have chicken broth in the pantry. Another item of permanency in my home is a humidifier along with its friend ‘Vicks vapor liquid’. I had never really realized the importance of the items until we needed them on short notice.

For the last few days I have been living on bottled water and chicken broth due to a seasonal cold. With the humidifier working overtime to get me feeling normal, my two children rally to my side in hopes to make me something great to eat. My five year-old son offers me a tofu hot dog and a smoothie yogurt, while my 11 year-old daughter wants to serve me scrambled eggs with a side of green tea. The green tea sounded great, so I went with that.  And while she’s working hard in the kitchen, the little one brings me Lysol Instant Hand Sanitizer along with a juice box. He then lines up snacks in hopes to entice my appetite. The lineup of fruit chips, banana, Barbequed Baked Lay Chips, Homemade Oatmeal cookies, and a six pack of water is placed on the coffee table.  Then finally, my eggs are ready. This whole task was started 45 minutes ago, but due to the interruptions and bickering over who is going to do what, my hunger intensifies.

The eggs made me feel much better, but I don’t think it was the eggs that did it as much as the love that went into them. As soon as I felt better (two days later), the appearance of the living room made me laugh. There were toys to entertain me just in case I felt like playing. Every disinfectant the kids could find and every snack item from our pantry surrounded where I’d been camped-out.

My holiday savers were more than the snacks and bottled water. It was the TLC that went into producing the scrambled the eggs and the juice box.
