Getting back to the Basics

By Katharine Branham

With all that our days entail, it is often hard to get a balanced meal. When you mix in caring for little ones, the task grows tougher. At one point, I found myself in this same situation and demanded a new solution.

The chips and other junk are poisoning the consumers. I spent several hours walking a grocery store and came up healthy snacks, quick fixes, and lunches for everyone. Think outside the box of normal offerings for a Child's lunch.

These are convenient for working parents and healthy too. My kids love them. I noticed the high amount of junk that is put in the fruit chews or fruit rolls that are promoted for children's lunches. The healthy alternative that is 99% real fruit and taste great is the Gerber Graduates for toddlers. The bar is a ½ serving of fruit. They come in a pack of 5 bars and all are delicious. I have now started to hide the stash from my kids and ration them out. They are organic and simple.

The next item always in my cart is Mott's Healthy Harvest with no sugar added. This is a favorite of mine to use in place of oil when baking. Think along the lines of applesauce and containers for travel and lunches.

Go back to the baby aisle. Check out the containers of bananas and other fruits.  My oldest is 11 with braces and youngest 5. Both have enjoyed the fruits from the baby aisle. The items were quickly noticed by their friends and questioned about. This has caught on, and friends are now bringing these items to school as well.
